In this intense cold we've had lately, you'd think life would grind to a halt, but NO.

These ASH KEYS may look inert, but something is going on in readiness for next spring. Ash seeds will only germinate if they've been frozen.

And something rarely seen , apart from the late Spring, is this GROUP of BLACKBIRDS. 4, to be precise, sitting together, not squabbling, as if it was the most natural thing in the world for them to do.

A sign of a very hard winter.

Blackbird Punch Up - Tuesday 15.6.10

Went out into the garden today and was transfixed by a small flock of LONG TAILED TITS. As ever, I heard them before I saw them.

They belted about filling their little beaks with loadsa grub.

THEN>>>>>

A mess of a Blackbird turned up. He was making a racket. 

What a disaster!

Then the cause of his squawking arrived. 

FIGHT!!

They went on for battling for a while and then sat on the fence.....

facing off each other.

Scruffy won.

PS. We now have a gay Blackbird couple in the front garden, they're gathering nest material together! .......could it be these two?????  (26.6.10)
