Notes From Her Outdoors

I love the great outdoors. There's a lot out there to keep me fascinated.

Throughout 2010 I attempted to blog every new thing I saw as it came into season, wandered past me, or was found hiding in a sneaky niche.

Now I have the task of naming all the life I recorded - life was never sweeter.

This year I'm recording the things that catch my eye. and hopefully, will catch yours too.

Wish me luck, I'm going out!

Newt Tuesday 2.11.10

I WENT TO THE PLOT TO DO SOME MAJOR DIGGING TODAY.

Imagine my surprise at finding this little NEWT crashed out on the surface.

It was in hibernation under the soil and couldn't move at all once on the surface. It just lay there, as it had landed,

so I looked at it's belly and then re-buried it. I hope I did the right thing, because half an hour later I unearthed another one. This time I buried it without taking its' picture!

What kind of NEWT are they? I don't know, but I will find out.

NEWT! - Saturday 12th June 2010

I took a wander up to my Garden Plot to do a bit of weeding - as you do.

In amongst the onions and their attendant  weeds, was a velvety brown strip of something. It didn't look particularly alive, but it's texture was incongruous. I stopped to take a careful, second look.

Lissotriton - a type of small newt.

It's not a very impressive wee beastie AT ONLY AN INCH AND A HALF LONG , but I was

CHUFFED TO LITTLE MINT BALLS  : )

I moved it to the spring water area of the plot, which also placed it at a safe distance from my

FLASHING TROWEL.
