Notes From Her Outdoors

I love the great outdoors. There's a lot out there to keep me fascinated.

Throughout 2010 I attempted to blog every new thing I saw as it came into season, wandered past me, or was found hiding in a sneaky niche.

Now I have the task of naming all the life I recorded - life was never sweeter.

This year I'm recording the things that catch my eye. and hopefully, will catch yours too.

Wish me luck, I'm going out!

Tadpoles - Wednesday 11.5.11

I swear I saw the beginnings of legs on one of the TADPOLES today, but I couldn't catch it.

So, I stuck my little camera under the water and stalked the biggest TADDY I could find.

HERE IT IS ..... NO LEGS :  (

Tadpoles - Wednesday 28.4.11

Well, what can I say?

They are bigger and more speckled. I love it when they develop those spots. It's the first step to FROGDOM!

This 'WOODLOUSE' was bimbling around the edges of this fibre glass pond.

So, for comparison, here are the TADPOLES IN THE PALM. I fancy they are a smidgen bigger.

Frog Spawn - Wednesday 30.3.11

Here's the result of all that FROG PAWN!

I looked into the pond today - NO FROG SPAWN - both blobs had gone.

IN JUST ONE WEEK!

At first I thought it had all been eaten because I couldn't see a single TADPOLE swimming about. Turns out it was me, trying to see into a dark pond. Once I found a lighter area, there they were!

I fished this tiny one out, it's still a comma shape, and popped it onto this BEECH LEAF.

Here are a few more, hanging about in the ALGAE around the edge of the pond. Next weeks pictures will look similar, but with bigger TADDYS

Frog Spawn, Week 2 - Wednesday 23.3.11

So much happening now.

Today I saw the first BUTTERFLIES of the year:-

PEACOCK
BRIMSTONE

The LADYBIRDS are out and about as are the HONEY BEES - IN GOOD NUMBERS.

The  STARLINGS are back and mucking about in our garden.

We've had SISKINS in the garden and we're still hearing the GOLDCREST we saw on the feeder the other week.

The BLACK CAPS have been around for several weeks now, but are beginning to sing their hearts out as are the BLACKBIRDS.

In my customers' pond, her 2 lumps of FROG SPAWN are doing fine. This lump was shot from above the water, The embryos look very different when compared to last weeks.

and this one, which is a week younger than the other one, was filmed from under water.

It'll be interesting to see them next week.

Frog Spawn Week 2 - Wednesday 16.3.11

That lumpy clump of FROG SPAWN I  posted last week has developed obvious dark spots in the centre.

I took this shot above the water ...

and this shot of a second, new lot of spawn, from under the water.

I'll take more shots as the weeks go on.

Tadpoles

Took my eye off the pool (!) Those frogs eggs have hatched. My customers' tiny pond was heaving with small Tadpoles. The bit you can see here is typical of the entire pond.

The Tadpoles seemed to be rasping off the algae from the sides of the pond.
