Notes From Her Outdoors

I love the great outdoors. There's a lot out there to keep me fascinated.

Throughout 2010 I attempted to blog every new thing I saw as it came into season, wandered past me, or was found hiding in a sneaky niche.

Now I have the task of naming all the life I recorded - life was never sweeter.

This year I'm recording the things that catch my eye. and hopefully, will catch yours too.

Wish me luck, I'm going out!

Late Spring Walk 27.5.13

Everything is about a month late this year.

Leaves have now burst on the trees, though not all of them, and many early spring flowers are in bloom. Soon it will be the longest day, high summer! May be on paper, summer's here, but not on the ground.

We walked along the lakes at Ruskin Mill, here in Nailsworth, up across the fields to the Bath Road and then back down to the mill once more to finish off.

Ramson (Wild Garlic) beside Ruskin Mill Lake.

Female Coot.

Crab Apple blossom.

Ramson running up a wooded bank.

A field of Buttercups beside the A46.

Such a big display.

Gorgeous Buttercup glowing in the late afternoon sun.

Horsley village.

Great Spotted Woodpecker - female - nape of her neck is black, not red.

These aren't very good photos,

but they are the best I could get,

without wading out into Ruskin Mill Lake!

Beside the lake, a Kingfisher sat quietly, soaking up the warmth of the sun.
As ever, a Heron was hanging around. Well they do have a trout farm here too.

Our Usual Walk

The first real clouds today. Still lots of blue up there too.

Saw a fox, though the photo's not really clear enough to post here. I've already posted this guys piccy, same time of day, same place ... so must be same fox?

Both the Beech mast and the Beech flowers; spring has sprung.

I don't know what this is ..... yet!

Moschatel

Thank you ispot.org

The most amazing, witch wood Beech trunk. TREE GOT SOUL.

COWSLIPS - in full, field BLOOM.

Crow on a deadwood tree, just taking in the view.

About once a week, in this field, or the one next to it, we find a puddle of feathers: Sparrowhawk?

Small Plantain - so pretty in 'bloom' and the leaves are stringy, but edible. I'd have to be proper hungry to bother though.

Three of the best

Bugle

Been in bloom for about a month, but so common I didn't think to take a piccy, DOHHH!!!! Dandelion.

I'm pretty sure this is a beech sapling. All the brown bracts are attached, I thought they had fallen from the tree above - WRONG.

Garlic flower about to burst its' breeches.

Not only tastes good, but looks divine too.

This also tastes garlicy, but less yummy than Ramson, It's GARLIC MUSTARD/JACK BY THE HEDGE .

The very first sign of Orchids in the meadow. Quite a few showing today, all about this size.

Grass may be a bit boring - green and spiked, but this tuft was almost variegated and in such lime green shades. Now that's NOT BORING.....is it???  Or is it             JUST ME????

Purple Moor Grass

Another one I'll have to look up. Thought it was a Spurge, but now, well, not too sure.

This bloody thing's  every where -   Aggghhhhhh!!!

Wavy Bitter Cress - Edible!

You can just make out the FLEDGLING DIPPER (blow him up a bit, it's  to the left of centre on that plank of wood).

Vetch, delicate member of the pea family.

Ferns are beginning to unfurl.

Cuckoo Pint.

Parsleys are coming up every where. I can't tell  them apart now. Old age is a terrible thing. I'll re-learn them this year, JUST FOR THE CRACK.

White Dead Nettle.

And Last, but no means least ........

THE HOUSE MARTINS ARE BACK.  No, not the band, the birds (Byrds)?   Piccy of three nests in a row, sorry about lack of birds, but will get them next time I'm near LAWNSIDE SHOP.

All in all, not a bad days watching.

Mares Tails, weirdest of UK pants.....in my opinion.
